Saying goodbye to your old home and moving into a new one can be a bittersweet experience. It’s also a lot of work. While there may not be any sure way to make your move stress-free, we do have a few ideas to help with your packing, decluttering, and other moving projects.

Make a Moving Calendar

Putting your tasks on a calendar will make moving much, much easier. Schedule out what you’re doing each day and then stick to it. If possible, plan to have all your big to-dos finished a few days before you move. This not only gives you some wiggle room for unexpected surprises, but also offers time to relax and enjoy a job well done.

Get Rid of Things

Moving is the perfect time to clean house. As you pack, keep an eye out for things you haven’t used for 6 months or longer. Ask yourself, “When will I use this?” If the answer is “I don’t know,” consider throwing away or donating the item. This not only helps reduce how much you need to pack/unpack, but you’re also decluttering your new home before you even move in. Easier move, cleaner house. What’s not to love?

Leave the Fridge

Sometimes it’s better to leave things behind than to take them with you. If you’re thinking of upgrading your furniture or appliances, consider giving your old units to the new owners. If you’re selling a house, some buyers even request that you leave these items as part of the contract. Doing this frees up space for moving and makes upgrading your new home an easier experience.

Mark Your Boxes

Do yourself a favor and pack in categories. Kitchen, bathroom, clothes, etc. Mark each box with a sharpie or, better yet, color-code them with neon tape. When you move into your new home, a quick glance will tell you which box needs to go where.

Don’t Procrastinate

Don’t wait. Seriously. Moving is stressful enough without rushing to finish things up the night before. Getting things done on time helps you stay focused on what’s next. Stick to your calendar, finish tasks early if you can, and try not to put off things you don’t have to.

Lastly, don’t forget to enjoy the moving process! It’s a great time to make memories, plan out your new home, and prepare for a fresh start. All that packing, cleaning, and transporting is a lot of work, but it you take it one day at a time and you’ll be all moved in before you know it.
