Every new student has a list of college necessities. While these lists can all vary, we’ve compiled a few essentials for anyone heading out on their own for the first time.

1)  Laptop and Tablet

A good, reliable computer is a must-have for all your homework and projects (and of course, Netflix). Whether you’re team Apple or PC, make sure you’ve got enough RAM and storage to keep up with your needs.  Not in the mood to lug a laptop around all day? For most of your notes, a tablet will do just fine. Some tablets even have special styluses to help with all your art projects.

2) Noise Cancelling Headphones

Annoying, distracting, or unwanted sounds are easily managed with a good pair of noise cancelling headphones. Find a reasonably priced set to help you stay focused.

3) Wireless Printer

Printing out assignments at the library is a hassle, especially right after an all-nighter. Consider getting a wireless printer to help you save time and avoid last-minute emergencies.

4) External Hard Drive

Sometimes our computers decide they’ve had enough, and it’s usually in the middle of a big project. Back up all your important work with an external hard drive to avoid any detrimental computer crashes.

5) A Reliable Book Bag

Don’t sacrifice function for fashion when it comes to your book bag. Look for great-looking bags that also offer the space, durability, and features you need for all your classes and projects.

6) Storage bins

Dorm rooms can be small. Tuck some flat storage bins under your bed to keep everything neat and organized.

7) Desk Lamp

Ever try sleeping while someone has the lights on? It’s not easy. Be considerate of your roommates and get a desk lamp. They’ll appreciate the decision and hopefully return the favor.

8) Vacuum

You’d be surprised how many dorm rooms don’t come with a vacuum cleaner. If you don’t want to be wading through dirt all semester, have your roommates chip in to get one for the whole apartment.

9) Mini Toolkit

You never know when you’ll need to fix something in your apartment. Whether it’s loose screws or new furniture, a toolkit is handy to have for all those small fixes and other projects.

10) Everyday Essentials

Heading back to campus can be a huge adventure and you want to be sure you have everything you need. Whether it’s furniture, appliances, kitchenware, or more, Big Lots has the perfect selection of Back-to-Campus necessities. Find all your campus essentials by visiting their website at BigLots.com.

Bonus Tip for Budgets

If you’re on a budget, Facebook Marketplace offers plenty of quality, second-hand options. Spend some time searching and you’re sure to find great prices for the things you need.
