Part 2: The Pros and Cons of Gel Mattresses
When was the last time you evaluated the quality of your sleep? Usually, we just get up like every other morning and head out to start our day. But take a moment and think about your mornings. Do you wake up rested or drowsy? Do you unleash a healthy stretch or does your body ache a little (or lot)? If we look at why we’re struggling to get a good night’s rest, we might discover many signs point to our mattress.
If it’s time to upgrade your mattress, you’ve come to the right place. We’re hoping to help you navigate the most popular options to find your perfect fit. In the second part of this series, we’ll walk you through the ins and outs of gel mattresses. How do they compare to their foam and innerspring counterparts? Read on to find out.
What is a Gel Mattress?
Gel mattresses are actually a variant of foam units. They utilize the same technology and materials but add an infusion of beads or layers to the top of the mattress or within the foam. Gel mattresses are relatively new, only being widely introduced to the market in 2011. The main function of gel mattresses is to provide a level of cooling to offset the heat buildup generated by basic foam beds.
What Are the Benefits?
Gel mattresses share most of the same perks as their foam counterparts, but the standout feature of gel mattresses is the ability to keep you cool throughout the night. They also offer slightly better support and motion separation. In addition to those features, most gel mattresses are layered, helping to prevent the stuck or sinking feeling you can get while sleeping in a basic foam bed.
Any Downsides?
Similar to foam mattresses, gel units are heavy. Really heavy. They also can “remember” your imprint, leading to uncomfortable nights trying to readjust your position. Additionally, some users say that once the gel soaks in enough heat, it starts releasing it back into your body, reducing your ability to stay cool.
What’s the Verdict?
Gel mattresses have the potential to provide better quality sleep than innerspring units. Gel and foam both provide levels of support that innerspring mattresses rarely match. On the other hand, if you sleep well on innersprings, you may not find gel appealing. Sometimes you just want the same, familiar comfort you’re used to.
