Computers have quickly become a necessity for many individuals around the world. Whether it’s for school, work, or staying in touch with friends and family, they provide a wealth of helpful tools and features. Computers and similar devices can be found almost anywhere and offer easy access to fun, learning, and communication.

When it comes to a personal purchase, however, one question shoppers might have is whether they need a laptop or a desktop. There are a number of pros and cons to each and we’ll be exploring some of those in this post series. Read on below for 6 laptop pros and cons

Pros

Mobile

Laptops offer a lot of benefits, but their standout feature is mobility. You’re not restricted to a single space and moving your computer doesn’t require a large box. Wherever you go, your laptop goes, too. Simple as that. Pause your work and start back up at any time, anywhere. This feature alone is why many people choose a laptop over a desktop computer.

Power Usage

Desktops need to be plugged in during use. Not only that, but so do their speakers, monitors, and other peripherals. A laptop has all these things built in, running on a battery, no strings attached (except when you’re charging). Charging your battery uses a fraction of the energy that running a desktop does, and once you unplug your laptop it will run completely on internal power.

Single Unit

Laptops come out of their boxes all set up and ready for use. The monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers are all built into the unit, creating a convenient, all-in-one experience you often don’t get with desktops. For many people, this is the ideal computer solution. A compact computer with everything you need for work, school, and entertainment.

Cons

Price

All that convenience and portability often comes with a price to match. When comparing a desktop and laptop with similar features, the laptop will usually be more expensive, sometimes hundreds of dollars more than the desktop. It’s a logistical game of Tetris getting all those parts into a small, mobile case and you’ll pay a premium for that benefit.

Repairs

The components in your laptop are carefully placed in a specific order and location. On top of that, the case surrounding those parts is securely fastened into place. Accessing any of your laptop parts require special tools and technical know-how. Most people don’t bother with the headache and opt for professional repairs. These are pricey and can take a good deal of time to complete.

Specs

One of the biggest differences between a laptop and desktop are the specs at each price point. Desktops can offer the same features, power, and optimization at a much, much cheaper price. Even laptops and desktops at the same price point have different specs, with desktops offering better options. Laptops compromise parts for mobility and you often see that reflected in their price, functions, and features.

Portability isn’t everything, though. If you want a more customizable computer experience, check out 6 Pros and Cons to Owning a Desktop Computer and see if that’s a better fit.
