Picking the Perfect Art for Your Home
BY Jenica October 7, 2020
Your home is your oasis. A little corner of earth that you get to claim as an extension of yourself! Sometimes interior decorating can be intimidating, but don’t let that daunt you from dressing your walls and shelves into a beautiful compilation to come home to every day. Here are some tips to help you get started:
Wait for Inspiration
What vibe are you going for in your house? What colors are you drawn to? What furniture and other elements do you already have that you want to keep? Every room doesn’t have to match, but it’s important to utilize what you’ve already got and make a plan or mood board to start.
Find Abstract Pieces for Relaxing Parts of the House
Abstract or simple pieces of art are perfect for your bedroom, a reading room, living room. or any other space where you go to disconnect. Keep in mind that your living room art sets the vibe for the home as it is the centerpiece.
Large Pieces are Best Placed at Eye Level
If you indulge in a gigantic beautiful framed canvas, it’s best to hang it eye level so your head isn’t craned upwards to look at it.
Personalize Your Workspace with Things You Love
The best place to go crazy with your artwork is in your home office. Hang a floating shelf and fill it with colorful and spunky pieces that reflect your favorite things. Pictures of your friends and family, quotes from your favorite book, that quirky little statue you got at comic con three years ago.
Don’t Forget the Kitchen and Bathrooms!
You’d be surprised how many people forget to decorate the two most used rooms in the house, yet often get overlooked because all the other things in it can start to get crowded. Use open cabinet space to fill small corners with. Keep your art choices small in the kitchen so they don’t compete with all the other elements in the room (backsplash, tile, appliances, etc.). The bathroom should carry on a serene and calming picture that is welcoming to you and all your guests.
Try to Avoid Purchasing Trendy Décor
This especially applies to children’s rooms where we tend to love character-based things that they’ll grow out of and get rid of later. Keep things more whimsical than character based and you should be able to use the art pieces for much longer! We also have a tendency to purchase what is popular for the time. Look for timeless items that won’t age over time.
Of course, your house is your space and you are free to decorate however you please! Use these points as guidelines if you wish moving forward.
