4 Tips for Summer Traveling
BY Jeffrey May 17, 2021
With the winter months long behind us and spring nearing its end, our adventure-filled summers are right around the corner. For some of us, that means kicking back on our decks and enjoying a well-deserved burger. For others, summer may be spent fixing said decks and other projects around the house. Whether it’s swimming, camping, theme parks, or just plain old napping, there’s something for everyone during hottest season of the year.
But do you know what we love most about summer? Road trips. Across the state or across the country, there’s just something liberating about hopping in your car and driving. Windows down, music up, sunglasses on—just hit that open road and go. Before you do, however, it may be a good idea to give your car the ol’ summer checkup. Changing seasons can be hard on your vehicle and it’s best to make sure everything is 100% before hitting the open road.
Check Tires and Wheels
Cold temperatures can wreak havoc on your tires and wheels, and spring/summer is an excellent time to check for bumps, bulges, cuts, and other irregularities. As the months become warmer the rubber in your tires will expand, allowing you to see issues that may have been concealed during winter.
Also check for any cracks in your wheels as these may have been hidden under snow or dirt. Problems with either your tires or wheels can generally be averted if you catch the issue early. If the problems are severe enough or your tires are too old, you may want to consider picking up a new set before your trip.
Replace Peripherals
Those wipers may have gotten you through the worst of winter, but summer’s heat is sure to cause cracking, especially if they’re old. There’s just something truly awful about getting caught in a heavy thunderstorm and finding out your wipers are garbage. Skip the potential danger by replacing your wipers early if they need.
You may also want to check out your engine air filter and cabin air filter (if you have one). A new engine air filter will help with gas mileage, and a new cabin filter will improve your AC performance; both of which are needed on long, hot road trips.
Change Out Fluids
This goes without saying, but get your oil changed at regular intervals. Summer isn’t the definitive Oil Change season, but it doesn’t hurt to see if you’re due. Even if you’ve got a few hundred miles left before you need it, it’s generally a good idea to get your car serviced before any long trips. Be sure to check your coolant, brake fluid, power steering, and washer fluid while you’re there.
Test Battery
Batteries last a good long while and we usually don’t even think about them until they start to die. While most mechanics check your car battery during service, it’s typically a good idea to test your battery before any long trip. If you notice dimming lights or a difficult startup, play it safe and check your battery’s charge.
