What to Know When Buying a New Mower
BY Jeffrey July 7, 2021
Lawnmowers. If you have a yard with grass, you need one. What else is there? Quite a lot, actually. There’s a bit more to finding the perfect lawnmower than “Will it cut efficiently?” Gas vs electric, riding vs push vs self-propelled. Even how high or low your mower cuts should be considered any time you’re ready to upgrade your lawn gear. While much of what you need is dependant on what type of yard you have, here are a few tips to help get you started.
Invest Wisely
Before you jump into purchasing a new mower, you’ll probably have a set price range you’re looking at. As with most things, there’s typically a sweet spot where your price and what the mower offers overlap. If you go cheap, you’ll obviously save more money. You’ll also have a cheaper mower with cheaper parts. On the other hand, mowers with higher pricetags typically come with better options and more durable parts. If you go too high you’ll start get diminising returns as needed features are replaced with flashy gimmicks. Always pick a mower that you feel comfortable with that also provides what you need for your yard.
Gas or Electric
We could write an entire blog about the pros and cons of gas and electric mowers (and we just might), but you really need to know are a handful of points. First, electric mowers are typically more expensive up front but the savings you’ll see from using a battery will fill that gap fairly quickly. That being said, gas mowers offer more range per tank. If you have a huge yard you may want to stick with gas as electric mowers will need a recharge (or two) to handle large properties. Features-wise, both gas and electric offer similar options and provide mostly the same benefits. It really comes down to upfront cost and how big your yard is.
Drive System
If you’ve ever mowed a steep hill with a push mower, you know the importance of using a lawnmower with the proper drive system. Flat yards are easily mowed with push mowers, while bigger yards with hills and dips may benefit from using a self-propelled mower. If your lawn is massive, a riding lawnmower might be the smart choice. Unless, of course, you enjoy spending 3 days cutting grass.
Features
Even after you’ve found your perfect mower, you’ll need to determine which features are important to you. For example, a mulcher is great for chopping up grass to a point where you won’t need to rake at all. Adjustable height gives you the freedom to pick how high or low you’d like your grass to be. Electric starts help you avoid throwing out your shoulder and additional safety features will help protect both you and your yard.
