When to Upgrade Your Kitchen

If watching HGTV’s ‘America’s Most Desperate Kitchens’ makes you want to overhaul your kitchen, then maybe it’s time to carefully examine your existing space to see if you’re going to devote the time and budget to upgrade your kitchen. We’ve put together a checklist for you to go through before upgrading your space to create a chef-worthy kitchen.
Too Many Dirty Dishes In The Sink? If you are working from home, you are probably snacking from home too. That means you could have WAY too many dirty dishes stacking up in the sink by the end of the day. Kitchen sinks should be at least 7 inches deep; anything less, and your words will quickly pile up and quickly reach the faucet. Heavy dish loads would benefit from a kitchen sink that’s 8 inches or more.
Your Family Is Getting Bigger (And Your Kitchen Isn’t). If your family is expanding and you don’t have food prep space, then you may consider making over your kitchen to create more space. Think about how many people will be meal prepping simultaneously and make room for your sous-chefs whether they are already full-grown or they will be one day!
Before The Holidays. If you enjoy entertaining or often must cook for a large crowd, you need more than the sliver of counter space between the sink, the microwave, and the stove to get the job done. Avoid the family gathering nightmare and plan your upgrade several months before the holidays. The last thing you want is to cook for a crowd in the middle of a dusty remodel.
Some Things Stay Dirty. No matter how much you scrub, you can’t seem to get that stain off the countertop, drawer, or cabinet, and it starts to smell. Mold and mildew can happen when an existing kitchen is old, or the plumbing hasn’t been upgraded in some time. Once mold or mildew sets into the walls or floors of your kitchen, it’s going to be a tough job to get rid of it, so you may have to gut your kitchen and replace the essentials for the health of your family.
Where Will You Eat? If you decide to go for a complete kitchen upgrade, including the walls, floors, appliances, cabinets, and drawers, then you may want to think about where your family will eat while the kitchen is under construction. If the answer is “outdoors,” then you will want to make sure your remodel is complete before the weather cools down if you live in a colder climate.
