The average person takes 10 to 20 minutes to fall asleep each night. If you’re one of the lucky people who fall asleep within minutes, you must be doing something right! If you need a little extra help to catch a few more ZZ’s, here are six easy tips that will likely help you sleep a little better tonight.

Create an Effective Bedtime Routine

First things first, look around your bedroom and fix the easiest things around you. Doctors recommend keeping your room temperature to 60-72 degrees for adults. Our body temperature drops a little as we sleep so a cooler temperature creates an ideal sleeping environment.

Make sure there are no distracting lights or sounds as well in your sleeping space as loud noise has immediate effects while we are sleeping which can lead to short-term issues during waking hours.

Turn Off Screens 30 Min. Before You Sleep

The National Sleep Foundation recommends we shut off our devices 30 minutes before bedtime. Use this time to decompress, read from an actual book, write in a journal, etc. The lack of blue light in your system will help you achieve a higher-quality sleep.

Use a High Performance Mattress and Pillow

Did you know swapping out an old mattress for a newer comfortable one could help you get an extra 42 minutes of sleep per night? While this is the most costly change in our list, we still think it’s important. The best mattress for you is going to be subjective and many mattresses need to be upgraded every 8 years (depending on the make and model of the mattress). Newer gel or memory foam mattresses have said to last more than 10 years! Just make sure you pay attention to the quality you have left in your mattress and upgrade when it’s time.

Increase Light Exposure During the Day

Resetting your internal clock can take a few days to take full effect. Make sure you get enough light exposure during the day to help you sleep better at night. Sunlight releases serotonin and can help us feel calm and focused and helps our body to releases melatonin at night.

Every person has a unique nightly routine, but these fundamentals are the same for everyone! Creating these healthy habits will help you get better sleep resulting in higher focus during the day, more energy, less food cravings, and numerous other benefits.
