Are you ready to start preparing your holiday card photo to send to your closest friends and family? Sometimes it can be tricky to decide between an indoor or outdoor shoot, figuring out what to wear, finding creative ways to keep the kids entertained, and coming up with poses for the family. You may need a few tips and tricks to get the right shot, and we’re here to help!

Find A Common Theme

A fabulous holiday photo card doesn’t always mean matchy-matchy outfits. Your image will be much more eye-catching if your wardrobe follows a specific theme rather than looking entirely in unison. Start by picking two to three complementary colors that you love, work well together, and of course, enhance the location. After deciding on a color palette, focus on building the vibe, such as boho, minimalist, preppy, or retro.

Find a Familiar Location

Find a comfortable location for you and your family. The golden hour right after sunrise or just before sunset is the best time to take portraits outdoors. At this time, the light is most flattering on people’s faces because the sun is higher in the sky. If you find taking pictures outside is too stressful, don’t forget that you can use any indoor space that is comfortable for you and your family. Find locations in your home where you have a clean backdrop, plenty of space, and great natural lighting. Once you’ve done so, it’s time to start capturing the moment!

Be Yourself

To create a warm holiday card photo, you must be yourself! Make sure everyone gets enough sleep the night before and take a nap if necessary on the day of the shoot. Dressing in comfortable clothes is critical because if you or your children are uncomfortable, it will show up in the picture and make the photoshoot more stressful. You can’t force a smile! Start by picking out a comfortable and easy outfit to move in, and then add fun accessories or props to elevate your everyday look.

DIY or Photographer?

It is essential to decide whether you will snap pictures yourself or hire a photographer. Depending on the situation, hiring a professional photographer can help ease the stress and help create the perfect holiday card photo. For others, using a tripod might be enough for them to achieve their unique family photo.

Poses to Try

There are several poses that you and your family can attempt to create the picture-perfect photo, such as capturing a tradition like baking cookies in the kitchen, posing in front of twinkling lights, blowing snow kisses, or reading a Christmas tale. Make sure you don’t cut out any body parts like elbows, hands, or feet from the photos and avoid any awkward gaps in the image. Squish a little closer together for a cozy feel. Once you are all set up, go ahead and try out a few different pose options, and don’t forget to have fun.
