Planting flowers and vegetables can reap bountiful bouquets, colorful salads, and scrumptious harvests for you summer dining table. If you think May is too late to start gardening, think again! You haven’t really missed any deadlines because there are several ways to extend your planting window depending on the crops you plant and how you plant them.

Choose Your Plants Carefully.

Not sure if you have a green thumb? Basil and mint are two culinary herbs that are easy for first-time growers. Basil is such a versatile herb, and it is simple to grow. Mint is another easy-to-grow herb, but it’s best to keep it in a separate area, like a window-sill box or a separate garden, since it can spread easily. It is very hearty and forgiving, so if you forget to water it, just like anything else, it will let you know. Beets do well in warm weather and can be planted any time in May. Lettuce is another plant that is easy peasy to grow. It can be sown directly in your garden bed, started indoors for transplanting, or purchased as a transplant. It’s one of the few crops grown all year in the U.S., but it should be shaded and harvested as smaller crops in hot weather.

Pick a Theme

Do you have a favorite home-cooked cuisine that appears on your menu every week? If it’s Mexican, perhaps a salsa garden would be a good choice for you. Salsa lovers can plant peppers, tomatoes, cilantro, and onions. May is not too late to plant as many different varieties of peppers as possible! They come in small, big, hot, mild, and various colors. You’ll be mincing up those peppers and creating jars of homegrown salsa in no time. A sauce garden is a fantastic option to up your pasta and pizza game if you love Italian food. For a tasty sauce, transplant and grow a combination of tomatoes, basil, onions, and oregano. If you are all about the presentation when you cook, then an edible flower garden might be the perfect match for your garden. Pansies, squash blossoms, chive blossoms, nasturtiums, and marigolds are excellent choices for a Pinterest edible garden board.

Consider a Robotic Mower.

So you want to garden, but where do you get the time? Think about buying a fully programmable robotic mower to spend less time on your lawn to free up more time on things you want to do, like gardening. You can control and manage this hi-tech mower from anywhere, allowing you to schedule your robotic mower to mow anytime, day or night, giving you complete control over your lawn’s maintenance. While setting up a perimeter fence to create boundaries for your robotic mower requires serious effort and does take time, who says setting firm boundaries doesn’t pay off in any relationship? The other con is that the mower can’t do anything about leaves on the lawn, but overall it is a great product to help maintain your lawn, rain or shine, day or night, giving you back that time to care for your garden.
